Garry Fabian Miller is an internationally acclaimed artist and one of the leading figures in contemporary camera-less photography. For over four decades, he has created photographs using only light, colour, and photosensitive paper, removing the camera entirely from his practice. His luminous abstract works explore light as both a physical phenomenon and an emotional and spiritual presence. Working exclusively in the darkroom, Miller creates unique photographic works without a camera or digital manipulation. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, astronomy, colour theory, and the changing rhythms of light, his photographs invite contemplation while exploring perception, time, memory, and the environment.

Early Life and Education

Born in Bristol, England, in 1957, Garry started his career with traditional photography, he abandoned the camera in the mid-1980s to develop an innovative darkroom process using carefully controlled exposures of coloured light. Since then, he has become one of the pioneers of contemporary camera-less photography.

Miller has lived and worked on Dartmoor, Devon, since the 1980s, where the landscape and changing light continue to inspire his practice.

Camera-less Photography and Artistic Practice

Garry Fabian Miller’s photographs are created directly on light-sensitive paper using custom-built equipment, coloured filters, and precisely timed exposures. Rather than documenting the visible world, he creates photographs from light itself, producing luminous geometric compositions that explore colour, nature, perception, and the passing of time.
