Since 2020 Jackie Mulder has worked on a project entitled ‘Thought Trails’. . In this work, and through her unique approach to photography and mixed media art, Mulder aims to challenge the viewer’s perception of photography and push the boundaries of the medium.
Born and raised in a small Dutch village within an oppressive and religious family, Jackie Mulder created her own safe world through meticulously scribbled drawings on paper, which evolved into works spanning several meters. At seventeen, she left her parental home, freeing herself from the constraints of her environment—a transformative experience that now fuels her artistic expression. Committed to challenging the status quo and deviating from conventional norms, this theme resonates throughout her work. After a career in fashion and graphic design, she graduated from the Photo Academy in Amsterdam in 2021.
Since 2020, Mulder has worked on ‘Thought Trails,’ a project where her unique approach to photography and mixed media art challenges viewers’ perceptions of photography and pushes the medium’s boundaries. Her creative process begins with a self-made photograph or a combination of several photos, followed by labor-intensive deconstruction and reconstruction, resulting in unique, multilayered, and often tactile artworks. She uses thread or pen to connect and separate elements, abstracting a life of memories, searching, and thinking. Embracing chance, she avoids preconceived notions of the final product, allowing her mind to roam freely. While working, she becomes completely absorbed in her own creative space, reminiscent of her childhood days spent scribbling in her room.
Jackie Mulder lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
