Dutch Artist Challenging Photography and Mixed Media Norms

Jackie Mulder, born and raised in a small Dutch village, grew up in an oppressive and religious environment. She created her own safe world through meticulously drawn sketches and scribbles on paper, which eventually evolved into expansive works spanning several meters. At the age of seventeen, Mulder left her parental home, freeing herself from the constraints of her upbringing—a transformative experience that continues to influence her artistic expression today.

Committed to challenging conventional norms, Jackie Mulder’s work often explores themes of freedom, self-discovery, and personal liberation, resonating deeply with her background. After a career in fashion design and graphic design, she graduated from the Photo Academy in Amsterdam in 2021, marking a significant shift in her creative journey.

Thought Trails: Pushing the Boundaries of Photography and Mixed Media Art

Since 2020, Jackie Mulder has been working on ‘Thought Trails’, a project that blends photography with mixed media art to challenge and expand the boundaries of the medium. In this project, Mulder’s innovative approach to art begins with self-made photographs or a combination of multiple images. She then embarks on a process of deconstruction and reconstruction, resulting in unique, multilayered, and tactile artworks that invite the viewer to reconsider the very nature of photography itself.

Mulder uses thread or pen to connect and separate elements, abstracting a life of memories, reflections, and constant searching. Her creative process embraces chance, allowing her to work without preconceived expectations, enabling her mind to roam freely. While creating, she immerses herself completely in her artistic space, a practice that harkens back to her childhood days spent scribbling in her room, forming the foundation for her current artistic identity.

Through her work, Jackie continues to explore themes of freedom, personal expression, and the power of breaking away from societal constraints.
