‘Crossing Paths’ celebrates the exceptional work of Babs Haenen and Jacqueline Poncelet; two distinguished artists whose friendship and artistic dialogue has spanned more than four decades. Their creative paths, while distinct, have continuously intersected, resulting in a profound exchange of ideas that has shaped and enriched their respective practices. This exhibition holds special significance for Taste Contemporary and marks an important moment in the gallery’s journey. As we settle into our new space, we present Jacqui Poncelet’s work for the first time alongside the work of treasured gallery artist Babs Haenen.
Babs Haenen is renowned for her ability to transform clay into fluid, organic forms that seem to flow effortlessly. Drawing inspiration from nature, and particularly influenced by the striking beauty of Chinese rock formations, Haenen’s work captures both the intricacies and dynamism of the natural world. Her mastery of colour and texture imbues each piece with a sense of movement and energy, allowing form and feeling to intertwine seamlessly. Her ceramics invite viewers to engage in a tactile dialogue, evoking a sense of wonder at the delicate balance between the fragility and strength of the material.
Jacqueline Poncelet’s expansive multidisciplinary practice crosses the boundaries of design, painting, and sculpture, demonstrating her versatility and innovation across a wide range of mediums. Known for her groundbreaking contributions to contemporary wallpaper design, She is equally acclaimed for her work in sculpture, painting, and architectural installations. Her fascination with pattern, colour, and texture transforms everyday materials into joyful, exuberant expressions of abstraction.
The synergy between these two artists is at the heart of ‘Crossing Paths’, which showcases the powerful artistic dialogue that has evolved over the years. Through their works, this exhibition explores how a shared respect and friendship can push the boundaries of their respective practices, sparking new ideas and possibilities. Haenen’s fluid, nature-inspired ceramics and Poncelet’s bold, abstract explorations of pattern and texture come together to create a dynamic and engaging visual experience. Their shared attention to surface, materiality, and the emotive potential of form, fosters a unique sense of harmony within the exhibition, while still maintaining the individuality of each artist’s voice.
On the opening weekend of ‘Crossing Paths’, the gallery will be open on Sunday 17 November (12:00-17:00) to coincide with ‘Weekend des Bains’, which runs from 15-17 November and is hosted by the Quartier des Bains.
