Taste Contemporary presented the gallery exhibition Turns and Returns: Alison Britton and Johannes Nagel from 21 March – 28 April 2024.
As a pivotal figure in postmodern ceramics, British artist Alison Britton focuses on the juxtaposition in her vessels between what she calls prose objects and poetic objects; those that are active and those that are mainly contemplative. In creating her work, thought processes, material challenges, and uncertainties as to what firing will do to the work result in many turns along the way.
For German born Johannes Nagel, influences include the perfect imperfection of Japanese ceramics and the dramatic intensity of Abstract Expressionism. For Nagel there is a starting point, or a point to return to and build again on what previously inspired him. At each turning point and as the work emerges he remains open to the instantaneous.
For both of these artist, these turns and returns challenge, provoke and inspire.
