‘I am a ceramicist and I collect overlooked objects. I give these forms a second chance in a new guise, in a new context and sometimes, I even add a new function. As a maker my aim is through sampling and remaking to explore the aesthetic potential of the shapes of these objects.’

Pushing the boundaries of Ceramic Art

Heidi Bjørgan is a contemporary Norwegian ceramic artist known for her unique approach to ceramic art and creative curation. She holds a Master’s in Ceramic Art and Creative Curating from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. Inspired by the philosophy of the great American potter George Ohr, whose goal was to never create identical pieces, Bjørgan challenges the traditional notion of pottery by intentionally “removing” the professional skills typically associated with ceramics.

Her works often appear as though they have melted or imploded in the kiln, with dynamic and expressive glazes that add to their organic feel. Instead of creating new forms, Bjørgan repurposes every day, discarded objects -once deemed trash – and gives them a second life. The reconstructed objects are recontextualized, given new functions, and transformed into contemporary art pieces with a new meaning and a different aesthetic experience.

Heidi Bjørgan’s works are represented in prestigious collections such as the National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design in Oslo, the Bergen Art Museum KODE, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Trondheim. Her pieces are also part of the collections of the V&A Museum in London and various private collections worldwide.

Heidi Bjørgan lives and works in Bergen, Norway.
