Norway has a rich textile and ceramic history with female artists gaining international acclaim in both traditions. Out of the Blue brings together the work of two contemporary Norwegian artists who continue to challenge traditional practices in new and unexpected ways.
Interested in the tension between the recognizable and the distorted, Heidi Bjørgan takes, as her starting point, familiar jug and vessel forms. Challenging them both physically and emotionally, her ceramic pieces often appear as if they have melted or imploded in the kiln. Through cracks, shifts, unpredictable reactions during multiple firing processes, and unique glazes, each work acquires its own distinctive character.
Textile artist Kari Dyrdal works at the intersection of memory, pattern, and structure creating compositions that offer both intellectual depth and tactile presence. While widely recognised for combining traditional craftsmanship with modern digital tools, for this exhibition, she has created a new series of handwoven, hand-dyed, pieces.
